Here are some tips on making your computers work for you:

1) Use cloud storage: Cloud storage is basically storage of your data on remote servers. Instead of just keeping a folder full of data on a local machine, it is kept both on local and on a server, but other machines (with proper permission) can access that folder. Users of cloud storage can not only sync up files between their own computers, but share public folders and sync up with coworkers and colleagues. The five most popular cloud storage services are the following, all of which offer a certain amount of free, secured storage upfront:

  • Dropbox
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Amazon Cloud Drive
  • Apple iCloud
  • Google Play/Google Docs

2) Use Stardock's Fences: Fences is a very lightweight, very inexpensive program that allows you to box off sections of your desktop and group icons together. You can also create folder portals, which are basically windows to a directory that stay open all the time on your desktop. Combine a folder portal with a cloud storage folder (see #1) and you instantly have a live, always-syncing folder that is shared with any other computers you want in the world. That can save a lot of time and spare you a lot of email attachments.

3) (for Windows 8 and 10 users) Use Start8 or Start10 by Stardock: This is probably the best five bucks you'll ever spend if you are a Windows 8 or 10 user. This program restores the traditional Windows 7 Start button.

Or the FREE alternative is to download "Classic Shell", which is a highly rated program that does what the program above does.
